Autism Awareness Month

April is officially recognized as Autism Awareness Month in North America. It was originated by the Autism Society, which describes itself as the ” leading source of information, research, reference and support on the autism spectrum”. This organization has promoted increased autism research and created a united front between parents and experts to represent the autism community. About 25 years ago, they created a nationwide movement to further promote ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and allow for individuals with autism the “opportunity to achieve the highest possible quality of life”. This has led to better inclusion of children with autism in schools and improved acceptance of those with ASD and low verbal and cognitive performance (LVCP). Internationally, April 2nd is recognized as World Autism Awareness Day.

Weighted blankets have deep roots in the autism community. Many children with autism suffer from poor sleep due to sensory issues. One of these is sensitivity to certain fabrics. A weighted blanket is used as a grounding device to minimize movement while sleeping and thus lull the person into REM sleep. The application of pressure causes a physiological response that releases serotonin and melatonin, thus inducing calmness and a sense of well-being. In this state, a user of a weighted blanket can encourage improved sleep. Sensory Goods originally began to craft and sell weighted blankets with individuals with autism in mind. This began due to the founder having two children with autism and needing affordable therapy solutions. Once they began to notice positive effects on those without autism, they shifted their attention to promote their product to anyone who could benefit from a deeper night’s sleep. It is thanks to the autism community that anyone, including myself, can now address the sleep issues that all of us experience with the use of weighted blankets.
